Major George Hugh Digby

George Hugh was the son of Lt. Col John Almerus Digby of Chalmington House, Cattistock, Dorchester, Dorset and Diana Alicia Scott. He was christened in Cattistock, on 24 November 1867.

He was educated at a preparatory school at Castleden Hall, Farnborough, and then at Eton. He matriculated from Christ Church in 1880.

At the time of the 1891 census, he was described as being a student for the Civil Service. Later he joined the Dorset Yeomanry and fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902 attd 48 Company (North Somerset) 7 battalion Imperial Yeomanry. He was awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal Clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902.

He married Lady Muriel Augusta Fox-Strangeways, daughter of the 5th Earl of Ilchester on 5 August 1903: they were second cousins once removed. At the time of his death, they were living at Chalmington House. Lady Digby died on 7 January 1920.

He was accidentally killed on 20 October 1914. His Estate amounted to £32,181 18s 10d, probate granted to Henry Montagu Digby, a major H M West Riding Regiment.
