Cathedral Volunteers welcome Actor Anton Lesser as Coffee Morning Guest Speaker

We were honoured to welcome a celebrity guest at this month’s Cathedral volunteers’ coffee morning: star of screen, stage and airwaves, Anton Lesser.

The volunteers’ coffee morning is one of the ways we recognise the indispensable contribution of the Cathedral’s volunteers. Invited guests sit down for a relaxed talk and Q&A on their topics of expertise. Lesser (Game of Thrones, Andor, Hollow Crown) shared stories from his career, including his unusual route into acting following his late discovery of a passion for the stage while working as an architect in Nigeria.

During his visit to Christ Church, Anton Lesser was also able to view items from the Foundation’s library and archives relating to Thomas More, the famous humanist, statesman and bitter opponent of the English Reformation he portrayed in the BBC’s adaption of Hilary Mantel’s Booker Prize-winning Wolf Hall. Among them was The Workes of Sir Thomas More Knyght (1557), the first collected edition of More’s English works. The essays within include More’s History of King Richard III, the first Shakespeare role Lesser played.

Thank you very much to Anton for joining us – we hope you enjoyed your morning here as much as we did! Thank you as well to our Volunteer and Visitor Coordinator Miranda Hockliffe and Assistant Triona Adams for organising the event. Next month, our volunteers will be joined by Christ Church’s Head Gardener, John James, for a guided tour of the summer gardens.

Christ Church has over 350 volunteers, who contribute in roles from arranging flowers to stewarding at services to leading musical worship as members of our Cathedral Singers. If you are interested in becoming part of the Volunteer community, visit our volunteer page.
