Jonathan Freeman-Attwood elected to Honorary Studentship of Christ Church
Christ Church is delighted to announce that Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood CBE has been elected to an Honorary Studentship. The election recognises his commitment to education and musicianship.
Professor Freeman-Attwood is the 14th Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, a post he has held since 2008.
Over many decades, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood CBE has enjoyed a highly successful career in music as performer, producer, educator, writer, and administrator. Since 2008 he has been the Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he has pioneered innovative programmes and fostered key international relationships, as well as masterminding several major artistic and professional initiatives. As a result, the Royal Academy of Music now sits among the elite group of the world’s most distinguished music conservatoires. He was conferred a Professor of the University of London in 2001.
As a trumpet soloist, Jonathan has released fourteen solo albums, which have attracted wide critical acclaim for their musical originality. He is also a highly respected recording producer, having made over 250 commercial discs for many of the world’s most prestigious labels. His productions have won significant awards, including several Diapasons d’Or and Gramophone Awards.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has maintained close links with Christ Church, where he studied for an MPhil in Musicology in the 1980s; he has been mentor and adviser to successive Organists and a great supporter of the Cathedral Choir.
On learning of his nomination Professor Freeman-Attwood said: “I accept this nomination with enormous gratitude. It gives me great pleasure to have an official association with Christ Church, a place where I am proud to have studied and where I have made so many friends. You may be assured of my continued efforts to support the institution, and particularly its music, in whatever way I can.”
