Judith Valerie Engel – Giving Day Piano Recital

Judith Valerie Engel is an Austrian concert pianist and musicologist. She is currently pursuing a DPhil in Historical Musicology at the University of Oxford, writing about the piano music of Viennese 18th-century composer Marianna Martines. She is the recipient of the Stone-Mallabar Studentship in association with Christ Church.

Judith Valerie started studying the piano at the age of five with Neuhaus student Professor Mag. Nina Igudesman. From the age of 17 onwards, after graduating high school a year early, renowned pianist and pedagogue Professor Pavel Gililov was her teacher.

Under his supervision, she completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with the highest distinction at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where she was also a recipient of the university’s merit-based scholarship. During her MA, a brief Erasmus+ stint took her to Helsinki, studying in the piano class of Teppo Koivisto at the Sibelius Academy.

Before coming to Oxford, Judith Valerie was pursuing graduate studies at UBC in Vancouver, in the piano studio of Dr Terence Dawson, winning multiple awards and scholarships. She has also trained privately under several distinguished professors, such as Paul Badura-Skoda and Matti Raekallio.

Judith Valerie performed in venues across Europe and North America, such as Konzerthaus Wien, Chan Centre Vancouver, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and many more. She is a laureate of numerous national and international competitions and has been featured in music documentaries, most recently a film about Marianna Martines that was produced by the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) in 2019. Her recordings have been widely shared on social media and aired on various radio and TV stations.

In her free time, Judith Valerie volunteers as a First Aider for St John Ambulance and is a licenced instructor with British Taekwondo, teaching at a local Oxford-based club. During her time in Salzburg, she organised many charity events supporting women’s shelters and grassroots organisations fighting domestic violence. While at Oxford, she was co-lead on a Public Engagement with Research project, funded by TORCH, that ran in collaboration with TransOxford, called ‘Siren Voices’.
