Marking LGBT+ History Month at Christ Church

UK LGBT+ History Month was established in 2005 and has been celebrated each February for the past 20 years, offering a chance to recognise the tremendous contributions of LGBT+ people to all areas of life throughout history. As February 2025 drew to a close, we caught up with our undergraduate LGBTQ+ Representatives Cathryn Head and Vita Bannister to find out how the occasion was marked at Christ Church.

This year Christ Church marked LGBTQ+ History Month with events such as the Unity Dinner, bringing the community together for its annual celebration of diversity, difference and pride.

LGBTQ+ History Month dinner

The Unity Dinner, which took place in the McKenna room on 10 February, was an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ+ community to socialise in an inclusive and welcoming environment while enjoying a wonderful meal. We, the LGBTQ+ Reps, made a heartfelt speech at the dinner acknowledging the importance of this month to us and the whole community.

The theme of this year’s LGBT+ History Month was ‘Activism and Social Change’, and throughout February we have taken care to remember members of the LGBTQ+ community who have played a key role in activism and social change but who have been historically overlooked, such as the 2025 LGBT+ Historical Figures: Octavia Hill, Ivor Cummings, Annie Kenney, Charlie Kiss, and Olaudah Equiano. Inspirational information and fun facts about these revolutionary people were shared in weekly LGBTQ+ emails, honouring the legacies of these influential figures.

The progress flag has been proudly flying in both Tom Quad and Peckwater Quad throughout the month. This has been a wonderful, public display of our community at this College, acting as a physical reminder to all members of Christ Church about the value of LGBTQ+ History Month.
