Randolph was born in Partick, Glasgow, the third son of Charles R. Murray, an iron and steel merchant, and his wife Joan.
He was educated at Glasgow Academy and came up to Christ Church in 1914. On 27 September 1915, he commenced service and served in France and Belgium.
His name was listed in the Illustrated London News Roll of Honour.
His name is on the Glasgow Academicals Memorial.
