Qualifications

BSc, MA, DPhil (Oxford)

Academic background

I was educated at Imperial College London and Magdalen College, Oxford.

Undergraduate teaching

I give tutorials in years 1–3 of the undergraduate course, typically focusing on classical mechanicals, special relativity, electromagnetism and sub-atomic physics.

Research interests

I am an experimental physicist who studies CP-violation, which is the difference in behaviour between matter and antimatter, and related open questions of the Standard Model of particle physics. I tackle these challenges through measurements of rare processes involving the decays of hadrons containing beauty or charm quarks. I have been fortunate enough to have worked on several projects which have made significant progress in this quest, and was a founding member the LHCb experiment on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which I led as Spokesperson between 2014 and 2017.

In the first phase of my career I studied electroweak physics on the DELPHI experiment, also at CERN. Here my most significant contribution was in the measurement of the mass and width of the Z boson, and the mass of the W, through performing a precise determination of the collision energy of the accelerator.

In 2017, I was awarded the Chadwick Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics, and in 2018 was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
