Qualifications

BA (Yale); MA (Cambridge); PhD (Harvard)

Academic background

I received a BA in Comparative Literature from Yale University, an MA in Art History from Cambridge University, and a PhD in History of Art from Harvard University. I have been awarded a number of prestigious grants and fellowships, including from the Harvard Society of Fellows, Leverhulme Trust, Henry Moore Foundation, Fulbright Commission, Mellon Foundation, and Harvard’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa i Tatti in Florence. I will be a Visiting Professor in 2025 at the Sorbonne’s Centre André Chastel (CNRS) in Paris.

I am currently Head of Oxford's History of Art Department and the Tutor in History of Art at Christ Church, as well as serving as an Elected Member of the University's Governing Council. I have also been Associate Head of Oxford’s Humanities Division and have held a number of senior positions at Christ Church, including Senior Censor, Junior Censor, and Tutor for Admissions.

Teaching

I was awarded a University Teaching Prize in 2009 for helping found Oxford's History of Art undergraduate degree. I have been the co-ordinator of the History of Art undergraduate and Master’s degrees and Tutor in History of Art at Christ Church. My undergraduate and graduate teaching includes the historiography and methodologies of Art History, the art and architecture of Early Modern Europe, and women and the visual arts. I have also supervised nearly 20 doctoral students.

Research interests

I have published widely on the history of sculpture from the late Medieval period to the present day; on women and the visual arts in Renaissance and Baroque Europe; on the history of photography, with a particular focus on the photography of sculpture; and on the historiography of Art History as a discipline. A number of my publications are available on my Academia.edu page.
