Revd Richard Peers appointed Dean of Llandaff Cathedral

Richard joined Christ Church in 2020 at the height of the Covid pandemic, taking up the role of Sub Dean and residentiary Canon. Richard was formerly Director of Education in the Liverpool Diocese.

As well as having responsibility for the day-to-day life of the Cathedral, Richard has served as Chair of the Cathedral School, overseen the 80 Christ Church livings, and been a full member of the Governing Body of Christ Church.

During what has been a difficult time, Richard has worked tirelessly to maintain the life of the Cathedral, encouraging a new, more diverse congregation and providing pastoral support to the students, academics and staff of the Joint Foundation.

Richard has welcomed innumerable visitors and tourists to the Cathedral, offering prayer, ministry and the opportunity of pilgrimage to all those who have crossed its threshold. His faithful witness to the good news of the gospel through his preaching and leading of intercessions has been an inspiration to all.

With his partner Jim and his dog Teilo, he has extended considerable hospitality to the College and Cathedral communities, and to the wider city of Oxford, bringing these groups closer together.

Richard said: “It has been an immense privilege and deep joy to minister as Sub Dean at Christ Church during recent challenging years.

“The team at Christ Church Cathedral is resourceful and resilient and I will miss working with my friends and colleagues in this beautiful and sacred space.

“Christ Church is a wonderful and unique institution and it will be very much in my thoughts and prayers as it conducts the Governance Review and fulfils its vocation as a Joint Foundation in the University and in the Diocese.

“I am profoundly grateful to Bishop Steven, the College academic staff and to all who have provided support and care in my ministry here.”

Christ Church wishes Richard and Jim well as they prepare to move to Llandaff in the coming weeks. Richard will preside at the altar as Sub Dean at Christ Church for the last time on 13 November. Evensong on 12 November will be followed by a reception.
